A board that makes gravity obvious
Lift a true ipê board and the first lesson arrives through your arms. It is heavy. Not “solid-looking” heavy—actually, unmistakably heavy. Put it beside a board of the same size from a lighter species and ipê feels as though someone quietly turned up gravity.
Look closer and the colour runs from olive-brown to deep chocolate, sometimes crossed by darker or greenish streaks. The grain is fine to medium and can run straight, irregular or tightly interlocked. Properly worked, it can finish exceptionally smooth. Left outdoors, the fresh brown colour gradually moves toward silver-grey unless it is maintained with a suitable finish.
This is the timber Koala Deck Designs means here by Ipê Tobacco: the dense commercial ipê long traded under the botanical umbrella Tabebuia and now largely placed in Handroanthus. It is not Zeyheria tuberculosa, the very different tree also called ipê-tabaco or ipê-felpudo in some parts of Brazil.
That distinction sounds fussy until you realise what is at stake. The name affects the expected wood properties, the conservation story and the documents that should travel with the timber. A nickname may begin the story; a scientific name is what lets us check it.
- Commercial names: ipê, Brazilian walnut, lapacho and pau-d'arco.
- Traditional classification: the lapacho group of Tabebuia.
- Modern botanical home: many major decking species are now placed in Handroanthus.
- Representative species: H. serratifolius and H. impetiginosus.
- Plant family: Bignoniaceae, the trumpet-vine family.
- A misleading cousin: “Brazilian walnut” is only a trade nickname; ipê is not a true walnut.
Tabebuia or Handroanthus? The tree did not change—our map did
Calling this timber “Tabebuia” is understandable. Timber manuals, invoices and scientific papers used that name for decades, and the trade still does. But taxonomy is a map scientists redraw when better evidence arrives.
The old, broad Tabebuia grouped together branches of the family tree that did not form one natural lineage. A major revision published in 2007 restored the genus Handroanthus for many of the hard, dense ipês. That is why the same species can appear as Tabebuia serratifolia in an older document and Handroanthus serratifolius in a current botanical database.
Nothing happened to the tree. Its name tag moved.
Tabebuia also remains a valid genus for other related species, so it should not be replaced automatically. The complete two-part scientific name is the important clue.
The practical rule
Record the scientific name exactly as it appears in the current supply documents, then check whether it is an accepted name or an older synonym. “Tabebuia” is a genus, not a complete species identity.
And what about the word “Tobacco”?
Common names are gloriously untidy. Brazilian references record “ipê-tabaco” for more than one tree, including Handroanthus serratifolius in Pará and Zeyheria tuberculosa in Paraná and São Paulo. The nickname may also be linked in workshop folklore to irritating sawdust and old-fashioned snuff.
For Koala, Ipê Tobacco is a product name, not a botanical certificate. The scientific line on the timber paperwork remains the deciding clue.
Before the deck, there was a tree full of trumpets
To meet the living tree, we need a clearly labelled guide. Handroanthus serratifolius—formerly Tabebuia serratifolia—is one of the best documented commercial ipês.
It is a large deciduous tree. During the dry season it can shed its leaves and then flower across an almost bare crown. The effect is startling: a tall green structure seems to switch overnight into a cloud of yellow trumpets. Bees from groups including Centridini and Euglossini are documented pollinators.
After flowering, the performance changes from colour to flight. Long, dry capsules ripen and split. In this representative species they have been reported at roughly 19–40 centimetres long, with about 123–152 seeds in a fruit. Each seed carries a thin papery wing. It has no engine, no steering and one excellent piece of physics: more surface area creates drag, slows the fall and gives moving air longer to carry it away.
The seeds do not all wait patiently for next year. Natural longevity can be short, so nursery collection, drying and storage have to follow the species and the season rather than a generic “ipê calendar.”
- A bare crown flowers. Pollinators move between the trumpet-shaped blooms.
- A long capsule develops. The fruit dries while its many seeds finish forming.
- The capsule opens. Dozens of light seeds are released.
- The wings borrow the wind. The next generation leaves without taking a single step.
These measurements and timings belong to the named representative species. Other commercial ipês differ.
When the dry season turns yellow
Across Brazil, flowering ipê can transform an otherwise spare dry-season landscape. A crown that recently stood almost bare fills with trumpet-shaped blooms, bringing an abrupt return of colour and becoming a familiar marker of seasonal change.
Some relationships with that flowering are community-specific. Participatory work with Guarani communities in Rio Grande do Sul records flowering ipê, called tajy, as an announcement of Ára Pyau—“New Time”—when planting begins. A Funai account from the Guarani Mbyá community of Pindó Poty describes a season of renewal in which ceremonies in the opy, the house of prayer, begin again.
That knowledge belongs to the communities that hold it. It should be presented with its source and context, rather than turned into one universal meaning for ipê or applied to every Brazilian people. Nor does a cultural relationship identify the species or origin of a particular deck board; those facts still belong in the timber records.
Why builders respect it
The United States Forest Products Laboratory describes commercial ipê as very heavy, averaging about 1,025 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content. Thoroughly air-dried heartwood can be dense enough to sink in water. That is a memorable demonstration, but not an identification test: density varies and several timbers can sink.
The same reference describes ipê as very strong, with hardness roughly two to three times that of white oak. Its heartwood is highly resistant to decay fungi and insects, including termites, although it is not invincible and can be vulnerable to marine borers. The pale sapwood behaves differently from the heartwood and should not inherit its reputation by association.
Those traits explain the timber's long history in demanding work: decks, heavy flooring, railway sleepers, tool handles and durable construction. They also explain why experienced installers do not treat it like an easy softwood.
The useful numbers
- Density at 12% moisture: about 1,025 kg/m³. The boards are heavy and demand careful handling.
- Relative hardness: roughly 2–3× white oak. Fixings and machining need planning.
- Grain: straight to irregular and often interlocked. Sharp cutters and careful machining matter.
- Natural durability: high in the heartwood, with excellent outdoor potential when the construction details are right.
- Important limit: susceptible to marine borers. “Durable” never means resistant to every organism or exposure.
These are representative values for the commercial lapacho/ipê group, not a laboratory certificate for every board. Species, origin, moisture, growth and test method all shift the result.
The timber makes tools earn their keep
High density and hardness mean that cutting, drilling and fixing deserve a deliberate method. Sharp, suitable cutters are important. Predrilling helps control splitting and protects screws. Stainless-steel fixings, correct spacing, ventilation, drainage and allowance for movement are parts of the system—not decorative extras.
Bonding can be difficult too. Research by the Forest Products Laboratory points to high density, interlocked grain and wet-condition movement as reasons ipê can challenge exterior adhesives. A beautiful board is not permission to improvise the assembly around it.
Wood dust also deserves respect. Extraction, eye protection and suitable respiratory protection belong in the workshop. We do not need an unproven story about one chemical causing a sneeze to justify sensible dust control.
The technical truth
A durable species cannot rescue a poor detail. Long service comes from the complete system: structure, spacing, drainage, ventilation, fixings and maintenance.
Is true ipê naturally slip-resistant?
The honest answer is: a species name alone cannot promise safe wet grip.
Ipê's tight surface and wear resistance are useful, but a wet deck is a complete walking surface, not a wood sample in a catalogue. Profile, sanding, finish, board direction, slope, drainage, algae, dust, leaf litter and maintenance can all change how it behaves underfoot.
That is why Koala treats grip as a design-and-care question. Water needs somewhere to go. Debris needs to be removed. A pool surround needs detailing and maintenance appropriate to frequent wetting. If a project has a formal slip-performance requirement, the finished system should be assessed to the relevant standard rather than relying on a marketing phrase.
The valuable-tree problem
True ipê's performance makes it desirable. In a natural forest, however, valuable commercial trees do not arrive in warehouse rows. Some ipê populations occur at low density, scattered across large areas. Reaching selected trees can open roads and disturb habitat far beyond the footprint of a single trunk.
High value also creates an incentive to exaggerate inventories, misuse species names or move unauthorised timber through apparently legitimate paperwork. Research on Amazonian ipê logging and Brazil's own conservation assessments describe serious pressure and traceability challenges. Conservation status differs by species and assessment, which is one more reason that the scientific name matters.
This does not make every ipê board suspect. It means the origin story is not optional. Legality and responsible management are material properties you cannot see in the grain.
Every board needs a passport
A convincing timber journey is made from connected records, not one impressive logo. For native Brazilian ipê, ask how these layers fit together:
- The authorised source. Native-forest production should link to the applicable environmental authorisation and, where relevant, an approved Sustainable Forest Management Plan (PMFS) and operating plan.
- The scientific identity. The species name—or the authorised taxonomic level—should follow the material. “Ipê Tobacco” alone is not enough.
- The domestic journey. Sinaflor and DOF+ Rastreabilidade, or an integrated state system, connect authorisations with controlled transport and storage. Fiscal documents should agree with the forest-origin records.
- The international layer. Since 25 November 2024, covered products from Handroanthus, Tabebuia and Roseodendron require the applicable CITES export licence or Pre-Convention certificate. Appendix II regulates trade; it is not a ban, does not mean every species is interchangeable as decking timber, and is not a sustainability badge.
- Any voluntary claim. Certification can add useful independent requirements, but the certificate scope and the claim on the sales document still need to match the timber being sold.
IBAMA's current system traces native logs from their authorised forest location through processing and movement. That is the goal. IBAMA has also documented gaps and inconsistencies in parts of the wider control chain, so responsible purchasing still involves checking that the records tell one coherent story.
Five questions worth carrying to the timber yard
- What is the current scientific name on this delivery?
- What authorised source produced it?
- Do the DOF+/state and fiscal records agree on species, product and quantity?
- If it crossed a border, which CITES document applied?
- How will the design, installation and maintenance honour the timber's potential?
True ipê earns its reputation through a rare combination of mass, strength, durability and beauty. The best deck story does not stop there. It joins the living tree, the paper trail and the craft on site—so that an exceptional material has a reason to remain exceptional for years.
